Let's Learn About France!
History:
Did you know … The French History began with a warrior tribe of people known as the Gauls. Rome and the Romans conquered the Gauls and they were followed by the Franks from Germany. The Franks called this country France.
Napoleon Bonaparte, a general during the French Revolution, declared himself leader of France in 1799. He began a campaign of wars with neighboring countries and built a large French empire that ruled over much of continental Europe. But France’s domination in Europe came to an end in 1815, when Napoleon was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo.
Culture & Language:
Did you know … Most people associate French culture with Paris, which is a center of fashion, cuisine, art and architecture, but life outside of the City of Lights is very different and varies by region. Historically, French culture was influenced by Celtic and Gallo-Roman cultures as well as the Franks, a Germanic tribe. France was initially defined as the western area of Germany known as Rhineland, but it later came to refer to a territory that was known as Gaul during the Iron Age and Roman era.
French is the official language and the first language of 88 percent of the population. France is a member of the European Union and one of 23 countries in the region that uses the euro (abbreviated €) as its national currency.
Paris, France:
Did you know … Paris (nicknamed the "City of light") is the capital city of France, and the largest city in France. Paris began on an island in the Seine River. A people called the Parisii founded a town there more than 2,000 years ago. The Romans captured the town in 52 BC. The town later spread onto the riverbanks. Paris has many famous landmarks. The soaring curves of the Eiffel Tower can be seen from far away. The most important of Paris’s many museums is the Louvre. It has a huge collection of art, including Leonardo da Vinci’s painting, Mona Lisa.
Famous Landmarks:
Did you know … France is associated with everything from romance to incredible cuisine, but the country also offers some amazing landmarks that you won’t want to miss. The heart of the country is undoubtedly Paris, home to world-class museums, architecture and nightlife. Outside of the capital, small towns, castles, villages and mountains offer an array of attractions that belong on your bucket list. From iconic attractions like the Eiffel Tower to the stunning Abbey of Fontenay, each of the famous landmarks in France is worth a visit the next time you’re in this European country.
Famous Citizens:
Did you know … If you think of famous French people, Napoleon Bonaparte and Joan of Arc are often the first to come to mind. The history of the French Revolution is explained in schools all over the world. But there are so many other great French people you should know.

Crepes!
For many, French cuisine is virtually synonymous with gastronomy. From soufflés to croissants to crepes, French food boasts a rich and sweeping culinary history that includes rustic home cooking, elaborate court-dining masterpieces, and Parisian haute cuisine. Though French cuisine often comes with a side of “that’s-too-difficult-to-make-at-home,” the basic methods — building a sauce, deglazing, braising, poaching — are quite simple and will carry you far.
